From 1963 to 1968, he studied piano with Prof. H. Volger and chamber music with Prof. L. Schuster at the Leipzig University of Music. He also took part in master classes with Paul Badura-Skoda in Vienna. After teaching intensively at the music academies in Leipzig and Weimar from 1970 to 1986, he was appointed full professor of piano at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar in 1986.\r\n\r\nAt the same time, he toured extensively throughout Europe as a soloist with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra until 1991 and also performed as a soloist and chamber musician in Europe, Asia and South America. He has performed with conductors such as Kurt Masur, Herbert Blomstedt, Sir Neville Marriner and Marek Janowski. In addition to organizing master classes in Japan and South Korea, Arens regularly acts as a juror at international competitions in Bolzano, Budapest, Dublin, Santander, Utrecht, Weimar and Vienna. His work is documented in a wealth of radio and TV recordings as well as CD recordings.\r\n\r\nFrom 1993 to 1999 and again since 2007, Rolf-Dieter Arens has also been Artistic Director of the Schloss Hundisburg Summer Music Academy. In 1995, he founded the chamber music association \u201cWeimarer Solisten\u201d. He has been Artistic Director of the International FRANZ LISZT Piano Competition Weimar-Bayreuth since 2000. Arens has been a member of the board of trustees of the New Liszt Foundation Weimar since 2006. From 2001 to 2010, he served as Rector of the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar.\r\n\r\nIn 2011, he was awarded the \u201cPremio Liszt\u201d in Grottamare (Italy) for his services to the artist and musical visionary Franz Liszt. As President of the Leipzig Cultural Foundation, Rolf-Dieter Arens has taken the lead in setting up a permanent Wagner exhibition in the Alte Nikolaischule in the composer's native city. In the 2014\/15 academic year, he is teaching as a visiting professor at Mahidol University Bangkok.
