Guided tour of the Alte Nikolaischule with a visit to the Richard Wagner permanent exhibition and the Richard Wagner auditorium
Richard Wagner, born in Leipzig in 1813, attended the Nikolaischule (today: Alte Nikolaischule) from 1828 to 1830. The Classicist school auditorium, restored according to findings for the period 1827, is the only authentic site for Richard Wagner’s work in Leipzig.
On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of his birth, an extensive permanent exhibition was opened in the basement of the building, devoted exclusively to the personality of the young Richard Wagner, his school years, his family, his environment, his musical training, his formative educational impressions and his early work. This makes this interactive, multimedia exhibition the only one with this thematic focus in Germany.
Our guided tour takes you on a journey through time, beginning with the opening of the city’s first citizen’s school, the Schola Nicolaitana, in 1512 and ending with Richard Wagner’s brief schooling episode in the building. Historian and monument conservator Dr. Wolfgang Hocquél will provide insights into the eventful architectural history of this important Renaissance building, which was saved from certain decay by its exemplary restoration in 1992 to 1994. The tour includes a visit to the Richard Wagner permanent exhibition and the classical Richard Wagner auditorium.
