Lecture “Brahms and Fuchs”,

On Wednesday, 6 September 2023, the chamber music festival “Con Spirito” 8.00 p.m. at the Bach Archive is “Brahms and Fuchs”; Brahms, yes, but Fuchs? Who is that? Four years younger than Edvard Grieg, Robert Fuchs belonged to the Viennese Brahms circle, wrote over a hundred works, including very finely crafted chamber music works, and taught most of the important students of the Viennese turn of the century, such as Gustav Mahler, Hugo Wolf, Alexander Zemlinsky and, last but not least, Jean Sibelius, who is also represented here with his early but no less expressive String Trio in G minor.
A lecture introducing the programme will take place immediately before the concert at 5 pm in the Grieg-Begegnungsstätte. Musicologist and Fuchs expert Dr. Adalbert Grote will introduce the programme items and go into particular detail about their genesis, biographical background and their musical stylistic peculiarities. In direct reference to this, another accent of the explanations will be the rarely encountered historical-thematic unity of the sequence of works in our concert, which could be given the subtitle “Between Late Romanticism and Fin de Siécle in late 19th-century Vienna”, since all composers refer both to Vienna and its historical background. The personal, artistic and socio-cultural interconnections of the composers will be the focus of the lecture.

Adalbert Grote studied musicology with Carl Dahlhaus and Rudolph Stephan in Berlin, among others, and completed his doctorate with a thesis on Robert Fuchs.
He has published in numerous musicological journals and has lectured nationally and internationally since 2005, including as a Lecturer at George Mason University Washington D.C. 2006/07, at national and international conferences of the College Music Society USA (2005-2017) and the International George Enescu Festival 2009/11/13 Bucharest.
Since 2009, he has been a collaborator of the project Zwischen Zeiten (Between Times) and a permanent author of the eponymous series edited by Violeta Dinescu at the University of Oldenburg. In 2015 he was appointed Member of the Committee for International Initiatives and Session Chair Staff of the College Music Society of America.
