Daniel Hope

Born in:

Durban, Südafrika

Current centre of life:

Berlin

Instrument:

Violin

Second, third or even fourth instrument:

Piano

My career aspiration as a child:

Violinist

This was the profession my parents envisioned for me:

Artist

Works or concert experiences that shaped me:

The Violin Concerto by Ludwig van Beethoven

Work with the greatest music-making pleasure (and why?):

Stravinsky’s “The Soldier’s Tale” – because I not only had the musical direction and played the violin, but also got to be an actor.

I would like a work for my instrument by this composer (and why?):

Thomas Adès, because he is brilliant.

I would get up in the middle of the night for that:

My children.

Special / curious own concert experience:

When an open-air performance of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto was drowned out by a choir of frogs from an adjacent pond.

My most valuable tip for the next generation of musicians:

The re-invitation makes the career, not the invitation.

That's what I wish for the future of the classical music scene:

Fewer busybodies.

My next project:

A new violin concerto by Mark-Anthony Turnage.

That's what I associate with Leipzig as a city of music:

Mendelssohn!
